ABUJA — Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has threatened legal action against former ally and actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo over what he described as false and defamatory allegations made against him during a recent television interview.
In a pre-action letter dated June 9, 2026, Obi, through his lawyer, Chief Alex Ejesieme (SAN), demanded ₦5 billion in damages, a public retraction, and an apology from Okonkwo within seven days.
The legal dispute stems from comments allegedly made by Okonkwo during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, where he claimed that Obi and leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the South-East demanded ₦10 million from House of Representatives aspirants seeking party tickets.
According to Obi’s legal team, Okonkwo further alleged that there was documentary evidence supporting the claims, accused Obi of compiling candidate lists from a hotel room, and suggested that the former Anambra State governor was involved in financial impropriety and other criminal activities.
Obi’s lawyers described the allegations as “false, malicious and defamatory,” arguing that they portray their client as a fraudster, extortionist and dishonest political actor.
“The statements are extremely grave, damaging and reckless imputations of bribery, extortion, fraud, financial dishonesty and criminality directed at the character, integrity and public standing of our client,” the letter stated.
As part of the demands, Obi is seeking a complete withdrawal of the statements, a public apology on Channels Television and across Okonkwo’s social media platforms, and an undertaking that such allegations will not be repeated.
The legal team warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period would result in court action, including claims for general, aggravated and exemplary damages amounting to ₦5 billion or any higher amount deemed appropriate by the court.
The controversy has generated significant political attention, particularly given the history between Obi and Okonkwo, who were once close political associates. Their relationship deteriorated following disagreements over party leadership and opposition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.
As of the time of filing this report, Kenneth Okonkwo had not publicly responded to the legal notice.
