Gunmen Attack Mining Site, Kill Five Youths In Plateau Community

At least five youths have been reportedly killed after gunmen invaded a mining site in Gero Village, Gyel District of Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack occurred at about 3 p.m. on Tuesday, just hours after another reported security incident around the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, where three security operatives were said to have lost their lives.

Gero Village is located approximately five kilometres from the NIPSS community.

A resident of the area, Ritiji Dalyop, told journalists that the victims were carrying out mining activities when armed men stormed the site and opened fire on them.

According to him, all five victims died from gunshot wounds sustained during the attack.

The killings were also confirmed by the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong.

The association described the incident as part of a growing security threat facing communities in the area and expressed concern over the safety of residents and strategic national institutions located nearby.

BYM also referenced the earlier reported attack around NIPSS, Kuru, which allegedly resulted in the deaths of three security personnel.

The group called on security agencies to urgently intervene to prevent further attacks and restore confidence among residents of the affected communities.

It further urged government authorities to strengthen surveillance operations and ensure adequate protection of lives and property.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the spokesperson of the Plateau State Police Command, SP Alfred Alabo, proved unsuccessful as calls and inquiries were not responded to at the time this report was filed.

The latest incident adds to concerns over recurring security challenges in parts of Plateau State, with residents calling for decisive action to halt the violence and bring perpetrators to justice.
