Neymar has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his career with the Brazil national team following the country’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The announcement came after Brazil’s 2-1 defeat to Norway in the Round of 16, ending the Selecao’s hopes of lifting a sixth World Cup title.
The forward leaves international football as Brazil’s all-time leading goalscorer after scoring 80 goals and providing 59 assists in 130 appearances.
Despite representing Brazil at four FIFA World Cup tournaments, Neymar was unable to win the competition before bringing his international career to a close.
His final appearance came in Brazil’s defeat to Norway, a match in which he scored from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time. However, the goal was not enough to prevent elimination as Erling Haaland’s two goals secured Norway’s place in the quarter-finals.
Neymar’s retirement marks the end of one of the most successful international careers in Brazilian football history, with the forward finishing as the nation’s highest-scoring player after more than a decade with the Selecao.
