Julián Quiñones etched his name into football history on Thursday after scoring the first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup during Mexico’s opening Group A clash against South Africa at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The Mexico forward capitalized on a defensive mistake from South Africa in the ninth minute, calmly finishing past the goalkeeper to ignite celebrations among the home supporters. The goal handed the tournament co-hosts an early lead and marked the first strike of the tournament.
Mexico started the match brightly, dominating possession and pressing high up the pitch as South Africa struggled to settle into the contest. Quiñones’ breakthrough rewarded the hosts’ early attacking intent and sent the packed stadium into a frenzy.
