AKURE — The Ondo State Police Command has stepped up security across the state following intelligence reports indicating that some cult groups are planning activities to commemorate the annual July 7 celebration.
The Command warned that anyone found participating in unlawful gatherings or cult-related activities would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the Commissioner of Police, Felix Ohagwu, ordered the immediate deployment of security personnel to identified flashpoints and other strategic locations across Ondo State.
According to the statement, the deployment includes operatives from the Special Anti-Cultism Squad, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), State Intelligence Department, Mobile Police Force, as well as personnel from various Area Commands and Police Divisions.
The police said officers have been directed to intensify visibility policing, surveillance, intelligence gathering, confidence-building patrols and targeted operations to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
The Command stressed that it would not tolerate unlawful gatherings, cult processions, initiation ceremonies, public display of cult insignia, brandishing of weapons or any activity capable of causing fear among residents.
It warned that anyone found violating the law would face immediate arrest and prosecution.
The police also appealed to parents and guardians to discourage their children and wards from associating with cult groups or taking part in activities linked to the annual July 7 celebration.
Owners of hotels, event centres, bars, lounges and other recreational facilities were equally advised not to allow their premises to be used for cult-related meetings or events, warning that anyone found aiding or harbouring criminal elements could face prosecution.
The Command further called on community leaders, youth organisations, transport unions, school authorities and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or gatherings to the nearest police station or other security agencies.
Police authorities said the enhanced security measures are aimed at ensuring the safety of residents and preventing any threat to public peace across the state.
