The veteran forward, who was widely expected to be making his final appearance at the tournament, was unable to help Portugal find the breakthrough despite leading the attack alongside João Félix and Bruno Fernandes.
Portugal created opportunities during the first half, with Ronaldo testing Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón on several occasions. However, Spain remained organised defensively, with Rodri playing a key role in limiting Portugal’s attacking threat throughout the contest.

The decisive moment came in the first minute of stoppage time. Ferran Torres quickly restarted a free-kick before delivering a pass into the penalty area, where Mikel Merino calmly finished past Costa to score the only goal of the match.
The late strike sparked celebrations among Spain supporters, while Portugal’s hopes of progressing came to an end.
Portugal bow out of the tournament after previously defeating Croatia in the Round of 32. Spain, meanwhile, continue their impressive defensive run and advance to the quarter-finals with confidence.
