ABUJA — Former President Goodluck Jonathan has dismissed reports alleging that he was offered ₦500 billion to contest the 2027 presidential election against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Peter Obi, describing the claim as entirely false.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media, Dr. Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan said the report was fabricated and intended to drag him into unnecessary political controversy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The former president denied ever making any statement suggesting he received an offer to enter the presidential race in a bid to split votes in the South-South region.
According to Eze, the report lacked the basic elements of credible journalism, including details of where or when the alleged statement was made, who supposedly made the offer, or any evidence to support the claim.
He described the publication as misinformation designed to mislead Nigerians and create political tension.
> “Jonathan was never involved in the alleged ₦500 billion offer to divide the South’s votes against Peter Obi in the 2027 general elections,” the statement said.
The media aide urged Nigerians to disregard the report and verify sensational political stories before sharing them, warning that misinformation often increases as election campaigns approach.
Eze stressed that Jonathan has not announced any intention to contest the 2027 presidential election and has not made any comments suggesting he was offered money to undermine any candidate.
He added that Nigerians should remain vigilant against fake news and politically motivated reports capable of distorting public discourse as preparations for the 2027 polls gather momentum.
