Brazilian football icon Ronaldinho is back in Italian football after agreeing to join Serie C side Ravenna FC in one of the most unexpected stories of the summer.
The announcement initially sparked excitement among fans, with many believing the 46-year-old was making a sensational return to professional football. However, reports have since clarified that Ronaldinho will not be part of Ravenna’s squad for the 2026/27 Serie C season in the traditional sense.
Instead, the former Barcelona and AC Milan star is set to take on a promotional and marketing role with the club, helping to boost Ravenna’s global profile and support its growth plans.
Speaking after the agreement was confirmed, Ronaldinho said: “New colours, same smile. I can’t wait to get back to dancing on the ball and write a new story together with Ignazio and the entire Cipriani family. Football has always been a source of joy for me, and I want to bring that same spirit to Ravenna.”
Ravenna owner Ignazio Cipriani described the agreement as an “extraordinary” moment for the club, saying Ronaldinho’s impact extends far beyond what he achieved on the pitch.
While Ravenna vice-president Ariedo Braida confirmed that the Brazilian legend will not play regular Serie C matches next season, he did not completely rule out the possibility of exhibition appearances.
Ronaldinho’s Legendary Career
Ronaldinho enjoyed a glittering career that saw him win the 2002 FIFA World Cup with Brazil.
At club level, he starred for Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and AC Milan. During his time at Barcelona, he won two La Liga titles and the UEFA Champions League in 2006.
His individual honours include the 2005 Ballon d’Or and two FIFA World Player of the Year awards.
When Did Ronaldinho Retire?
Ronaldinho played his final professional matches for Brazilian side Fluminense in 2015.
Although he had been without a club for several years, the Brazilian officially announced his retirement from football in January 2018 through his brother and agent, Roberto Assis.
Since stepping away from the professional game, he has remained active through charity matches, legends exhibitions and ambassadorial roles around the world.
Now, more than a decade after his last competitive appearance, the smiling magician known for his dazzling skills, no-look passes and trademark flair is set to begin a new chapter in Italy.
