The Arewa Christian Youth Leadership Forum has rejected reports linking former Zamfara State Governor and Senator representing Zamfara West, Abdulaziz Yari Abubakar, to an alleged gold smuggling syndicate, describing the claims as politically motivated.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by its Publicity Secretary, Melah Yusuf, the forum said the allegations were aimed at tarnishing the senator’s reputation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the group, it had taken note of publications circulating on social media and some online platforms alleging that Yari was connected to a gold consignment reportedly intercepted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).
The forum argued that the reports were based on anonymous sources and unverified claims, warning Nigerians against what it described as the increasing use of misinformation, propaganda and character assassination in the country’s political space.
It maintained that Yari remains one of Northern Nigeria’s most influential political figures and has consistently demonstrated support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and its Renewed Hope Agenda.
According to the statement, the senator’s backing of the current administration has been public and principled, rooted in the belief that continuity of government policies is essential for economic growth, infrastructure development, improved security and national cohesion.
The group expressed concern that certain political interests might be attempting to weaken voices supportive of the current administration, noting that the timing and nature of the allegations had raised questions about the motives behind the reports.
While acknowledging the constitutional responsibilities of the EFCC and other law enforcement agencies, the forum urged that any investigation be conducted professionally and without political interference.
It also cautioned against what it described as media trials, stressing that no individual should be judged based on speculation, anonymous allegations or unverified reports.
The forum reiterated its support for the rule of law and the constitutional principle that every Nigerian is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
It further urged members of the public to disregard narratives capable of creating political tension and called on media organisations and commentators to uphold professional standards by verifying facts before publication.
